Fort Collins Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Will A Rodent In The Attic Have A Nest Of Babies?

You heard some scratching sounds coming from the attic and determined that there is a rodent living there. Whether it is a mouse, rat, squirrel, or other animal, you want to get it out as soon as possible. Before you get too far in the removal process, however, you have to figure out whether or not baby animals are present.

How To Tell
Depending on the animal, there is a very good chance that a nest of babies will be present. Mice and rats, for example, breed so quickly that any large group is likely to have young animals. In the case of squirrels, most of the animals that look to turn your attic into a home will do so because they are mothers of young babies or about to give birth. You can confirm that baby rodents are present by checking the attic for a nest or the presence of babies. You can also see whether it is currently breeding season for the particular animal in your attic to get a good idea. A wildlife expert will be able to determine whether there is a nest of babies present since they have experience recognizing the signs.

Complications With A Nest
When the rodent in your attic has a nest of babies, this complicates matters significantly. You don’t want to separate the mom from her young as this will be horrible for both of them. The mother will begin to worry and try to find her babies while the babies will essentially be receiving a death sentence. Without access to food from their mother, they will die. Because of this, you need to remove them all together.

Trap And Relocate Together
A method such as exclusion or trapping relies on all the rodents in your attic being able to reach the traps or entrance, but this isn’t possible when babies are present. You may have to trap the mother and then physically remove the babies (with gloves and other protective gear) so you can relocate them together. You can also simply wait until the babies are old enough for traditional methods to work. Once squirrels reach 12 weeks of age, for example, you should be able to use exclusion.
